Pattern by Teresa Richardson

5, join

1. 10 SC in chain loop, join (10SC)

2. CH 1, 2 SC in each SC, continue around, join (20 SC)

3. CH 1, 1 SC in next SC, 2 SC in next SC,continue around, join (30SC)

4. CH 1, SC in each of the next 2 SC, 2 SC in next SC,continue around, join (40SC)

5. Ch 1, 1 SC in each of the next 3 SC, 2 SC in next SC,continue around, join (50SC)

6. CH 1, 1 SC in each of the next 4 SC, 2 SC in next SC,continue around, Do Not Join (60SC)

7. SC in next single crochet and continue around.

Your hat will be in a continual round without stopping to join. Your contrasting marker will show you your beginning. Complete your hat to the length you want. Sew in tails.

*If you want your hat larger:1. Use a larger hook at the start or midway through your hat.2.Add an additional row of increases: (this would come after round 6) 5 SC in each of the next 5 SC, 2 SC in next SC,continue around, Do Not Join (70SC)

Attach a contrasting color to the beginning sc on round 4 or 5. This will make it easy to see the beginning. Once you have completed round 1-6 you can finish the hat in one round.

Brim
Row 1: 1SC in next stitch, 2 SC in next stitch over the next 25 stitches. At the end of the row, skip one stitch on the main part of the hat and Slip Stitch in the next stitch. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 2: SC in each SC. At the end of the row, skip one stitch on the main part of the hat and Slip Stitch in the next stitch. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 3: SC in space just made and SC in each SC across. At the end of the row, skip one stitch on the main part of the hat and Slip Stitch in the next stitch. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 4: SC in space just made and SC in each SC across. At the end of the row, skip one stitch on the main part of the hat and Slip Stitch in the next stitch. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 5: SC in space just made and SC in each SC across. At the end of the row, skip one stitch on the main part of the hat and Slip Stitch in the next stitch.

Edging: Do a backward SC in each stitch around.

Thanks you so much!! This was so easy, and it is so cute! I made one for my three year old daughter and clipped a big bow into it - adorable!! I cannot wait to make more! Check on my blog at www.xanga.com/mtc92405 to see how it turned out! :)

thank you for the video you provided, im using an organic 100% cotton yarn to do the beanie with a G hook. its pretty snug. this is my first time. sure is addictive stuff though, i cant put it down. any suggestions will be appreciated. thanks again. Ina

Ina, If you would like the cap larger, you can use a larger hook.

thanks for the suggestion,i wanted to make a smaller one for my 1 year old. a book i'm doing crochet with has a pattern for a felted crochet flower, I am having trouble with it, it says in round 3: ( make a petal in the first chain 1 space in the previous round, chain 2) repeat 7 more times to make a second round of 8 petals with 2 chains in between each petal. I dont understand what type of space its talking about? and 2 chains in between petals front or back usually. I really like this project though, you throw the woolen flower into the washer and it becomes felted.

Ina,
You can use this pattern with a larger hook and yarn. It is for a baby but the size can be increased for a toddler size head.

hey i replied earlier to the rasta cap and i'm wanting to know if this brim will work on the rasta hat and if you can make the brim stick out longer Thanks in advance

Teresa said...

Laurilla,
I am working on some mittens.

Teresa said...

Anonymous,
I am not sure how this brim would look on the rasta cap. It may need revised since there is different shaping involved with each cap. Yes, it can be made longer to stick out farther.

I hope u will show the interest to reply to my comments.

Geena,
There are 3 parts to the beanie cap. The brim is the 3rd part. If it is not working, you can click on "Watch in High Quality" which is to the bottom right of the video.

When I'm making my beanie, it's not becoming like a circle (getting to be like a pansy flower fold. What's wrong with it. Can you help me.

Teresa said...

Anonymous,
It sounds like you may be crocheting tight or missing some of the increase stitches. Let me know if you need more help.

Thank you for the video. I am at the part where I sc in rounds without increasing. How can I add another color to make an even band? I tried but the different color band was uneven.

Teresa said...

Anonymous,
You would need to work the cap in rounds to change colors that will have an even edge. I do have a stripe beanie cap created in rounds that shows how to do this.

This is a great hat Teresa! Thanks so much for putting your patterns out there, especially with videos. I used a "J" hook instead of "I" --- maybe my tension is different than yours, but this is the 2nd hat I've made from your patterns where the suggested hook size is too small for me to use.

I'm doing this in bright green & purple and around row 21, I added two increases and row 22, two increases... we'll see how it all comes out.

I'm thinking of making this even larger for people with bigger heads and one smaller for like a 2 year old. What would you suggest for a 2 year old on this?

Thanks!

Grace Abounds,
A toddler head is approximately 18-20". I would suggest trying some smaller hooks. I do not have any small heads around for shaping hats. If I get an approximate size hat for a baby or small child, it is shear luck.

Hi Teresa,
If you don't mind can you please tell me what brand/type of 4 ply yarn you are using. I love that color very much but am unable to find the exact shade. Knowing the name would make it easier for me to buy...

Teresa said...

Anonymous,
I used 4 ply yarn and a basic brown color. I have thrown away the label so I am not sure exactly what I used. Sometime I will mention what I used in the video. I am am making an effort not to mention brand names because there are many more choices than what I use.

Hello! I have been watching your videos on making a beanie hat with the brim. I just can't figure out how you started the brim? How do you attach a new piece of yarn? Thanks so much!

Alisha,
I just use the same strand of yarn. I do have a video for the brim.
