1. Ch 5, join.
2. Ch 3, 2 DC in chain loop, *CH 2, 3 DC, 3 times,* Ch 1, SC in beginning CH 3. (3 DC)
3.Ch 3, 1 DC in space below, DC in each DC across, 2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC in CH 2 Loop, repeat around, end the corner point the same as in round 2. (7 DC)Repeat for each round that you want to make your granny square larger. 4 DC will be added on each side with every 2DC, CH 2, 2 DC corner.This is how many DC will be in each row as it gets larger.
4. 11 DC total

thanks for the demo as its so much easier to follow than a written pattern.I have only crocheted for 6mths & made a few basic granny square afghans but havent seen this before & it looks even better. For a scrap granny you do each row differnet colors but there would be so many loose ends& I only know how to sew them in. Do you have any tips or videos on how to crochet them in? thanks again.
Molli, What I suggest is crocheting right over them when you are doing your next round. You can also weave them through the previous round and then crochet over them which should make them more secure. I have a few demonstrations showing this technique. I am not sure how to contact you to send you the link.

How do I connect them? I would like to do a border, about an inch thick of another color in between the rows. Probably a thicher border all around the outer edge.

I like this granny square, but sometimes when I crochet them they don't turn out like a square... like one end is slanting or something. But other times it works. Am I doing something wrong? I've been crocheting for about 1 1/2 to 2 years.

It sounds like the stitch count may be off. It is important to count stitches to make sure you have the same amount on each side.
