Single Crochet Baby Beanie Cap

Crochet Abbreviations
SC = Single Crochet
LP = Loop
EA = Each
ST = Stitch
INC = Increase
Sts = Stitches
SC INC - Single Crochet Increase

Materials
Size F Crochet Hook
3 Ply Yarn
Tapestry needle - This is for sewing in the tails

Video Tutorial: Single Crochet Baby Beanie Cap

CH 3, join
*NOTE: You can start this with the magic circle as an alternative start.

Rnd 1: 10 SC in LP, Do Not Join

Rnd 2: 2 SC in ea SC. (20 Single Crochet)

Add a marker to your beginning stitch.

Rnd 3: 1 SC in ea SC. (20 Single Crochet)

Rnd 4: 1 SC in next ST, 2 SC in next ST. (30 Single Crochet)

Rnd 5: 1 SC in ea SC around. (30 Single Crochet)

Rnd 6: SC INC every 3 Sts. (40 Single Crochet)

Rnd 7: SC in ea SC around. (40 Single Crochet)

Rnd 8: SC INC every 4 Sts. (50 Single Crochet)

Rnd 9: SC in ea ST around. (50 Single Crochet)

Rnd 10: SC INC every 5 Sts. (60 Single Crochet)

Rnd 11-31: SC in EA SC around until you get the length of your cap.

Use a larger size hook and/or yarn to make the cap for a larger size child.

The Baby Beanie can be done with individual rounds or in a continual round. You will want to use individual rounds if you want to make stripes on the cap. The video tutorial shows a continual round. The picture symbol instructions are for individual rounds.

    have you ever come across a thread crochet beanie pattern? I tried thread crochet using a yarn pattern and I ended up with a yamulke. Additionally, I could not figure out the correct increment gauge.

  7. How can I size the hat up and down? Also, do you have a pattern for this beanie but with how to add ear flaps? That would be real cute. sargcity6@yahoo.com

  8. SARGENTS,
    You can use a larger hook to make the cap larger. You can add more increase round to make the cap larger. I have half circles that can be added as earflaps.

  10. Pepita,
    You can use a smaller crochet hook or you can make a smaller cap by eliminating increase rounds. Just continue the cap for the length after the second to the last increase round. It may or may not be the right size, so there will be some trial and error in adjusting sizes.

  12. Hi- I really love your blog and all your videos! I am self learning- well you are teaching me really! I decided last week I wanted to learn to crochet, picked up some yarn (4 worsted) and a hook (I) and got to work. I found your site and started on this hat. It took me a minute to get the rounding but once I did I was off to a great start. I am not sure what my problem is though- it seems like I start caving at round 5. I mean major caving, I could use my little beanie as a thumb warmer ;) Do you think this is because my hook is too large? Tension too tight maybe? I tried starting over last time to see if I stiched looser if it would help- no such luck.

  13. Hi I LOVE your videos and instructions! Thanks for helping me in my conversion from knitting to crochet! I WAS a knitter but now prefer crochet as it is more relaxing and easier on my hands.
    MY QUESTION: regarding "individual rounds" vs "continual". What type of "round" is the written instructions referencing? (I am using self striping yarn and want to use the correct technique).

  14. Thank You so much, This video has helped me so much! I am now on my fifth hat, every one loves the hat I made them for there new babies. I put a flower on mine and made it out of silk thread it is so cute!!!. YOU are so great at teaching crochet !!! I never had a grandmother that taught me and I bought book after book and worked on teaching myself but it was hard to follow those crochet directions. YOU WHERE an answer to my prayers. Now I need to master the booties. YOU ARE A BLESSING THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!

  16. I would like to make one of your darling hats with stripes, where can I find the directions for making it with individual rounds vs. the continual rounds. I tried adding a stripe using the continual round instructions and the stripe doesn't line up. Help!

    I've found that it depends on your type of yarn, your tension, the size of your hook...

    I used a bigger hook and bigger yarn to make two adult hats, and they both used about 3-4oz of yarn (1/2 to 3/4 a standard size). I also have a tighter tension, so it depends.

    It's a rule of thumb, however, to always buy extra and any leftovers could be used to make another hat, make a flower, etc.

  20. Hi Teresa. I am just a beginning crocheter, so I think I'm doing something wrong. When I got to the part in the pattern that says just single crochet until you get your hat length, I did that and instead of just going down the hat is also getting wider. Please help.
