Crochet Child-Toddler Slippers

Crochet Child - Toddler Slippers

Video Tutorial: Crochet Child Toddler Slippers

Abbreviation:
SC = Single Crochet
Ch = Chain
SC DEC = Single Crochet Decrease
ST = Stitch

Single Crochet Decrease = A single crochet decrease is reducing two stitches by joining them together as one stitch. You work the first part of your single crochet as you would normally work it in the first St. You leave the 2 strands of yarn on the hook. Insert the hook through the second stitch, pull the yarn through. You will have 3 loops on your hook. Wrap the yarn over your hook and pull the yarn through all 3 loops. This creates your single crochet decrease.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size H Crochet Hook
4-Ply Yarn
2 Yarn markers of a contrasting color

Slipper Modification:I have identified 3 sections in the instructions where you are able to make the slipper longer or shorter. You can use a larger crochet hook to make the overall size of the slipper larger. You can make the width of the slipper larger by adding more increase stitches in rounds 1-3.

Two ways to start the slippers are provided. You choose your preferred method.

Start 1: 4 FSC = Foundation Single Crochet

Start 2: Chain 5, 4 SC in chain

Round 1: CH 1, 3 SC in the previous SC, 1 SC in ea of the next 2 ST's, 3 SC in the next ST. 1 SC in ea of the next 2 St's. Join. (10 Single Crochet)

Round 2: CH 1, *2 SC in the same ST, 1 SC in the next ST, 2 SC in the next ST, 1 SC in ea of the next 2 ST's. Complete 2 times total from *, join. (14 Single Crochet)

Round 3: CH 1, *2 SC in the same ST, 1 SC in ea of the next 3 ST's, 2 SC in the next ST. 1 SC in ea of the next 2. Complete 2 times total from*, do not join. Place a yarn marker in the first stitch to mark the beginning of the round. (18 Single Crochet)

Round 4: Ch 1, 1 SC in ea SC around. (18 Single Crochet)

Round 5-8: Ch 1, 1 SC in ea SC around. (18 Single Crochet) With this section of rounds, you will be able to modify the length of the slipper to make it longer or shorter.

Round 9: The first part of this round with be the top part of the slipper. Put a yarn marker in the next unworked stitch from where you ended. Count over 9 from the first yarn marker and secure the second yarn marker in the stitch. Work 2 SC in the next ST, 1 SC in the next ST, 2 SC in the next ST, 1 SC in the next ST, 2 SC in the next ST, 1 SC in the next ST, 2 SC in the next ST, 1 SC in the next ST, 2 SC in the next ST. 1 SC in ea of the remaining 9 SC. (23 single crochet)

Round 10-14: 1 SC in ea SC around. (23 single crochet) With this section of rounds, you will be able to modify the length of the slipper to make it longer or shorter.

Row 15: 1 SC in ea of the next 2 St's. These two SC are to center the rows across the top of the slipper increases. Put a yarn marker in the next unworked stitch from where you ended. Count over 8 from the first yarn marker and secure the second yarn marker in the stitch. The stitches between the yarn markers will remain open. The final section of the slipper will be worked in rows. CH 1, turn 1 SC in ea of the next 15 SC. (15 Single Crochet)

Row 16-20: CH 1, turn, 1 SC in ea of the next 15 SC. (15 Single Crochet) With this section of rounds, you will be able to modify the length of the slipper to make it longer or shorter.

Row 21: Ch 1, 1 SC in ea of the next 4 St's, now do 4 single crochet decreases, (See the top of the instructions for detailed instructions), 1 SC in ea of the next 3 St's

Row 22: Ch 1, 1 SC in ea of the next 2 St's, now do 3 single crochet decreases, (See the top of the instructions for detailed instructions), 1 SC in ea of the next 3 St's.

Slip Stitch both sides, inside the slipper to close up the heel. This will take about 4 slip stitches. You can also sew it shut.

Cuff: Attach the yarn with a slip stitch in the back of the slipper. CH 1, evenly work 23 single crochet around. I joined about 3 single crochet stitches so there would not be any gaps.

Selene,
You can alter the size of the pattern. I have provided three places in the instructions on where you add more rows. You can add more stitches at any point in the first three rounds, to make the slipper wider around. With the 13 year old, if they have larger feet, you may want to consider reducing in size with the adult slipper. The 13 year old may even have an adult size foot. You would measure the feet and adjust from there.

Thank you. You could actually take the cuff on up and make socks with this pattern. Crochet is always going to be a bit thicker than knit when it comes to socks. If I am able to work through a pattern for socks, I will share it.
