Head Round 2: CH 3, DC in same DC, 2 DC in ea ST around for a total of 24 (24 DC total)

Head Round 3: *CH 2 SL ST in EA ST around. Continue around from *. SL ST in the BEG CH. SL ST in the CH 2.

Wings Row 1: CH 3, 5 DC in the same CH 2 SP. (6 DC total)

Wings Row 2: CH 3, Turn, DC in the same DC as turning CH, 2 DC in ea ST across. ( 12 DC total)

Wings Row 3: CH 3, Turn, DC in the same DC as turning CH, 2 DC in ea ST across. (24 DC total) Cut thread and secure.

Angel Dress Row 1: Skip over to stitch 11 and attach thread in stitch 11. This part will be worked over stitches 11,12,13,14. Ch 3, 2 DC in the same stitch as CH 3, 3 DC in ea of the next 3 STs. (12 DC total)

Angel Dress Row 2: CH 3, Turn, 2 DC in ea ST across. (24 DC total)

Angel Dress Row 3: CH 4, Turn, *SK a ST, DC in the next, CH 1, continue across from * (12 DC)

Different Brand Crochet Hook, Different Size - Crochet Tip 24

Looks can be deceiving when you purchase a lettered crochet hook. The following images will show three different brand crochet hooks, all lettered with the same size letter K. You will visually see a big difference. When you crochet a project with the same letter and the results are different, it could be that the author of the pattern used a different brand crochet hook. Keep in mind that individual tension will play a role in addition to hooks.

The top blue hook is a Boye. The center pink hook is a Susan Bates. I don't have a name brand for the green hook but the back says made in Germany.



When we look closely at the profile of the crochet hooks, this is where we see a huge difference. My favorite brand is the Boye crochet hook. I like it because of the rounded hook. The Susan Bates hook has a flatter hook. The narrow gap between the hook and handle of the Susan Bates will make your project smaller. When we look at the hook Made in Germany, it is much larger than the Boye hook and has a large gap between the hook and handle. This larger gap will make your project and stitches much larger. From this image, the Susan Bates hook looks as though it would be a size or two smaller.




Below are three more examples with a J crochet hook this time. Green is a Boye hook, pink is Susan Bates and the blue is made in Mexico.


Here is the profile of the crochet hooks. This time the Boye crochet hook is slightly larger than the hook made in Mexico and quite a bit larger than the Susan Bates hook.



In my collection of hooks, I was lucky to find two different sizes, with three hooks each, to demonstrate the vast difference in what appears to be the same size crochet hook based on the alphabetic letter. With a different company brand or country sizing, the hook size changes dramatically and will give you varying results with your end project.

When I learned to crochet there were two standard types of crochet hooks. Steel and aluminum. I know that there is a variety of shapes and sized hooks sold in the stores today. You just need to find something that works for you. The images below are example of the sizes for steel and aluminum hooks. Numbers are used with steel hooks. Alphabet letters are used with aluminum hooks.

Tunisian Crochet - Taming the Curl - Crochet Tip 22

Anyone that has crocheted with Tunisian crochet or the Afghan Stitch has experienced the curl. You can block your piece with light starch or with weight to reduce the curl. It is no different than the process for pressing flowers. You will what to make sure your piece is slightly wet with water. You can add a light amount of starch to your water. Cover your piece with a towel to absorb the moisture. Add some weight to the top of your piece. A plastic storage container or the lid will work great and you won't have to worry about it getting a little wet since it is plastic. Add some books inside your plastic container or on top of the lid and you have a moisture resistant weight for Tunisian projects.

Most skeins of worsted weight acrylic yarn do not recommend ironing the yarn.

Lopsided Rounds - Crochet Tip 21

For some reason, a granny square may lean at times, when working in the same direction. If you have a lopsided granny square or round this is what I recommend. Work your granny square by turning each round. Alternating directions, it will straighten up. Another thing to keep in mind, when you are in the middle of a project, you may notice imperfections that most people will not notice. Don't be hard on yourself.

Works In Progress (WIP) for Sunday October 26, 2008

The contest is going very well with a lot of entries. This is my first contest so I am open to suggestions for the length of time that blog contests typically run. I am also open to a more creative idea on how to pick a winner for future contests. I already have an idea on what I want to give away next. I will give you a hint. It has to do with something "new".

I am currently working on two more snowflakes and another flower. I love making flowers. I have some video editing and pattern writing to finish up and I will get them posted. I am going to do a tutorial on how to stiffen the snowflakes once I get my current projects complete.

I have to tell what I thought was a cute story that happened yesterday at the beach. My husband and I decided to head out to Tybee Island because it was a beautiful day. There were a lot of surfers. One surfer in particular looked very peculiar. It turned out that he had on a Halloween mask. It was just the funniest thing to see a surfer in a Halloween mask. I got a big kick out of it and some good video that I will be posting later on Youtube.

My Oldie Pumpkin Projects

I happened to come across these little creatures today as I ventured through my attic. I made them about 16 years ago and used to put them out at Halloween when my kids were little. Things change quite a bit without kids around anymore. I was really surprised that they are still pretty bright in color. I don't think I have ever washed them so maybe that is why. I noticed that the glue on the eyelashes of the big pumpkin is showing. It must have gotten hot and melted. The triple digit summer's take a tole on things in the attic. Other than that they are all in pretty good shape. The pilgrim pumpkins were always my favorite. I thought I had given my pumpkins away so I am happy I found them.

I am providing two foundation starts. I like the foundation crochet or chainless foundation better for some projects and this is one of them.

Foundation Start 1: 24 FHDC

Foundation Start 2: CH 25, 24 SC in ea ch across

Round 1: Side 1: 24 HDC
Side 2: 24 HDC , join in beg HDC, CH 1 (48 HDC total)

Round 2 - 12: 1 HDC between ea HDC, join ( 48 HDC total)

Fold on the diaganol and sew together.


Circle

MC or Chain 3, join.

Round 1: Ch 1, 6 HDC in loop, join.

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 HDC between ea previous HDC, join. ( 12 HDC total)

Round 3: Ch 1, 2 HDC between ea previous HDC, join, (24 HDC total)


Round 4: CH 1, *1 HDC between next st, 2 HDC between next st, continue around from * (36 HDC total)

Round 5: CH 1, *1 HDC in each of the next 2 Sts, 2 HDC in the next ST, continue around from *. (50 Sts total)
Round 6-7: Ch 1, *1 HDC between ea HDC around, continue around from *. (50 Sts total)

Knot and secure the magic circle well or it will come apart.

Fold circle in half. SL ST each HDC to the opposite HDC to secure the two sides together, ch 3, SL ST both sides, CH 3, SL ST both sides. Continue to other end. Cut thread about 18" for sewing to square.

With a whip stitch, Sew the flat side of half circle and one side of square. Sew the other half circle to the other side of the square to form a heart. Knot and sew in all the tails.

Foundation Chain - Crochet Tip 20

When creating an afghan, you may find it is hard to get the chain the same size as the stitches in your afghan. What may be happening is a curved afghan. You may find yourself ripping and restarting several times to get it just right. The chain may distort your afghan pulling it to much or making the chain foundation to loose. Once you complete your chain foundation, you may find that you crochet looser or tighter than the actual chain. When this happens, you use a larger hook if the chain is to tight or a smaller hook if your chain is to loose.

Twisted Thread or Yarn - Crochet Tip 19

Sometimes we can wind up with a thread or yarn that has a mind of its own. The more your crochet, the more twisted up it becomes. What I have found that works with unruly fibers is to straighten it when you first start your project. I will just run it between my fingers to get rid of any extra twist that may be lurking. When you are in the middle of your project you can let it unwind every now and then. After you crochet a while it will probably start twisting again. You will either need to let your work unwind or your ball of yarn unwind, maybe both. You can use a safety pin or paper clip to secure your work or your ball of yarn so they don't unravel while they are unwinding. When I lived in Germany I bought this really pretty deep burgundy thread. The more I would crochet the more knotted my thread would get. It got so bad at one point that I had to cut my thread to untangle the mess. Hopefully this will help save some frustration, should your fibers start to twist.

Hiding Crochet Yarn Tails - Crochet Tip 18

This is another way to secure yarn tails.

1. Weave your tail through the threads as you typically hide your tail.
   
2. Take your tapestry needle and separate the yarn fibers in to two separate groups of strands. This can be done with any ply yarn.
   
3. Take one group of strands, thread the tapestry needle and weave it through another stitch.
4. Now you will tie your strands together in a very secure knot. Knot it several times so the tails will not come out in the wash.
5. This is more of a time consuming process but well worth it if you have concern for your tails coming out in the wash.

If some of the toddler cap video looks familiar, that is because it is. The first 6 rounds are created the same as the adult version of the cap. I did a little recycling and restructuring to create the toddler cap. After round 6, there are no more increase rounds, so the cap will fit a small child's head.

Size: 18"-20", toddler size

You can use an "H" hook to make the cap larger.

4-Ply Worsted Weight Yarn - I used Red Heart for this tutorial. There are many types of yarn brands that will work with this pattern.

Cap can be created in stripes or a solid color.

There will be two techniques to start this project.

Technique 1: 30 Foundation Single Crochet

Technique 2: Chain 31, 30 Single Crochet in the chain.

The Galaxy Crochet stitch will be used for this project. We will be working on both sides of the foundation with round 1. There will be 15 GS=Galaxy Stitch on each side for a total of 30. The first Galaxy stitch will be worked in the beginning chain 2 of each round. One single crochet will be skipped between the elongated sections of the bottom part of the stitch.

Round 1: Chain 2, 15 GS down the first side of the foundation, 15 GS down the opposite side of the foundation. Join through the beg. ch and center joining. (30 Galaxy Stitch Total)

Round 2-8: CH 2, turn, 1 GS in EA of the next 30 ST's. Join (30 GS total)

Round 9: 1 CH 2, turn. 1 GS in EA of the next 26 St's. SL ST together in the center eye of the 5th GS. The last 4 GS will remain open for shaping the toe of the stocking. The first 4 GS will be shaped, folded over and sewn to the first 4.

Round 10: Turn, CH 2, 22 GS around, join. You will want to determine a right side and wrong side. Now you will want to sew your toe together, weaving and easing the toe for a more rounded shape. Sew the 4 stitches on each side together. Knot your tail, sew it in.

Round 11-19: Turn, CH 2, 22 GS around, join. Cut the yarn and secure with a knot when you have completed round 19.

Round 20: Attach White, CH 1, You will work 44 SC and random spikes around the stocking. You can skip this row if you just want to continue on with the cuff.

Round 21-24: CH 2, Turn, 22 GS around. join. Fold cuff in half.

STOCKING TAB
CH 5,
Row 1-17: 4 SC in ea ST for 17 rows. Fold over and sew in place on the inside or outside of the back part of the stocking.

The technique for this square will be done the same way as the diamond. You will need 5 yarn bobbins for the top of this heart.

Round 1: CH 1, 12 DC in the loop, join in the first double crochet.

You have a choice of two edgings to choose from. You can also use an edging of your own if you would like to.

Edging 1: Reverse Single Crochet

Edging 2: SL ST between stitch, *CH 3 SL ST in same sp, SL ST in next SP, Repeat around from *, join.

You will want to cut a length of yarn to attach the circles together.

1. The first frame shows the circle, in preparation to being added to the other petals.
   
2. You fold the circle about 1/3 of the way up to form a straight edge along the bottom of all 5 circles.
3. Fold the bottom points of the large circle together and run the needle through, pulling snug and securing. You will want to shape and adjust your petal at this point.
4. Knot and secure your petals. Hide the tail.

How to Keyword Search for Crochet Video's on the Internet

There are two places you can search if you are looking for a specific type of crochet video. On the Youtube main page or my main channel page tjw1963. In the image at the top, the red arrow on my main channel page points to where you can search for video's on my channel. I have found a way that works well for me, when I need to find a specific video of my own, to edit or another video that I may be looking for. I will be using the youtube homepage in the search example. This technique works well when searching for any video. I am going to use myself as an example since someone stumbling across this site may be looking for crochet related information.

• I want to look for all double crochet video's by tjw1963.
  
• In the image on the left, you will see a big red arrow on the Youtube homepage.
  
• To the right of the arrow is the search box.
  
• By default, the drop down box is on video so you don't need to do anything with that box.
  
• I have typed in the keywords: double crochet tjw1963
• TJW1963 is my channel homepage on Youtube, so I am associating the videos I am looking for with my channel specifically.
• The next step will be to click on the search box to the far right.
• The image on the right shows two video's that have the keywords "tjw1963, double crochet"
• There are other video's that will come up if they have some of the similar keywords, as you can see in the image.
  

This image below is another example of a specific keyword search for crochet shells. I am using the keywords "tjw1963 crochet shell" for my search. Nine videos show up.


In this last example I did a keyword search for "tjw1963 crochet". It is not a very narrow search but it should be displaying all of my crochet video tutorials. The results on the page will show 20, of about 240.

Visible Seams with Rounds - Crochet Tip 17

When creating a project in rounds, a seam may become visible at some point when working with a granny square, hat, or afghan. It does depend on the pattern stitches you are using. Some pattern stitches may not show a seam at all. Seams happen because of the chain and how the stitches are joined. I have found a method that tones down the visible seam. I am not going to say it will completely go away but it will help make it less visible.

Typically we are taught to do a chain 3 as the first stitch for a double crochet. The chain is what creates the visible seam, in addition to how it is joined to the beginning stitch. The circle to the right on both images, are created with the chain 3 which counts as the first double crochet. I have found that I like to do a chain 1, which will not count as a stitch, and then do a full double crochet. I will use this same technique with the half-double crochet to. I have found that the chain leaves larger gaps and holes that contribute to a visible seam. By doing the chain 1 and a full stitch, this technique will fill in the gaps that a chain will leave. When you complete your round, you skip over the chain 1 and join your round together in the top of the first stitch. In my examples, this will be the double crochet.

With the image on the right, the boxes highlight the starting stitches. If you click on the image close up, you will see the chain facing you. As you progress in your project the seam becomes more visible with each round. With the chain 1, double crochet, you have a full stitch with a short chain that is less noticeable.

When working in rounds, a seam may become visible at some point when working with a granny square, hat, or afghan. It does depend on the pattern stitches you are using. How we join also plays a big role with a visible seam. The image below is showing how to join to get a less visible seam. This can even be done with the chain, if that is the technique you are most comfortable with. It will twist the chain to the side, instead of being to the front, as shown with the circle, on the above right. You put the hook under both loops at the top of the chain or stitch, wrap the yarn over the hook, pull it through all loops.


No matter what method you choose, there may still be a slight visible seam with the basic single crochet, half-double crochet and double crochet when you are working with joined rounds.

Balloon Knot: SL ST in ea of the next 4 STS. CH 1, 3 SC. Cut yarn, secure and leave a length of tail for sewing.

Balloon String: Crochet a length of chain. Slip stitch in each chain to the end.

Sew the balloon/s in place on your project with the left over yarn tail. Sew the balloon string in place on your project making sure the ends are hidden under the balloon.

Chain 14

Row 1: 1 SC in each of the next 3 CH's, 1 DC in ea of the next 7 CH's, 1 SC in ea of the next 3 CH's, turn. I did not chain 1 on the turn for this project.

Row 2- 19: 1 SC in loop behind each of the next 3 SC, 1 DC in loop behind ea of the next 7 DC, 1 SC in loop behind ea of the next 3 SC, turn.

This is the same as my ribbing stitches. Typically we go through one or both loops at the top of the stitch as shown in the image to the left. In this case we are going through the loop that is below the two top loops as shown in the image to the right. When you create a new stitch, this loop is formed to the back of the stitch. When your turn, the loop to the back of the stitch will be facing you and is positioned just below the two top loops of the stitch. This is what created the ribbing look.

Sewing: Now you will sew the seam shut. You will have your right sides facing each other. You will sew through the same loops formed to the back of the stitch. Sew through the beginning chain foundation, matching the stitches to each other. When the seam is completely shut, you will weave the yarn through the edge of the opening, pulling it shut as you are weaving. Sew the remaining portion of the hole shut with several stitches across the hole, making it secure. Now you will want to knot it well and weave your tail through the stitches on the inside of the pumpkin. Turn pumpkin inside out. Stuff the pumpkin with polyester fiberfill.


Leaves: *CH 8, SL ST in ea of the next to Ch's. HDC in next CH, DC in ea of the next 3 Ch's, HDC in the next CH. Repeat from * for a total of 5 times for this project. Leaves can be made in one piece. You can make individual leaves, two leaves and change the amount how ever you want to. Sew to the center top of the pumpkin. Secure with knot when finished.

Stem: Ch 5, SL ST in ea of the next 4 Ch's, Sew to the middle of the leaves. Secure with knot when finished.

Antique Crochet and Tatted Lace

Not to long ago I shared a tip about recycling old crochet edgings. For all the multi-crafting people out there, you will find another idea for crochet and tatted edgings and doilys.

Betsy Miller has been generous to share her photo collection and great find of antique laces that she will be using in a crazy quilt one day. She has estimated that they may be from the 1930's time frame. Thank you Betsy for sharing your images.

My favorite is the two color ric-rac crochet edging. I have my own stash of antique lace doily's that I inherited from my Grandma when she passed on, only I forgot that I had the lace. I know, shame on me for forgetting but I keep them put away because I am afraid that they will get ruined. I like this idea of sharing old pieces. Betsy suggested creating a home for antique lace so I am going to use her suggestion.

This is a tip that I created for myself after a few errors on tail length . I did not leave myself enough thread to sew in the tail on a few occasions. This is what I did.

1. Weave the needle between the stitch threads.
   
2. Thread the eye of the needle. This will allow for the short tail to pass through the eye of the needle.
   
3. Pull the threaded needle through the stitch threads of the project.
