Letters and Numbers - Crochet Tip 41

There are several ways to get letters and numbers on a crochet piece.

1. Cross Stitch - Following a diagram to shape your number or letter
2. Embroidery Stitches - The satin stitch can be used to shape a letter or number and outlined with a running stitch or back stitch.
   
3. Crochet Chain - Crochet a length of chain. Sew the chain on to your crochet piece in the shape of the letter. For thicker letters and numbers, use a row of single crochet or the foundation crochet stitches.
   
4. Chart - Changing colors as you crochet across your row following a diagram. This technique is limited to the basic single, half or double crochet stitches.

Event Crochet Lace

You may have an event coming up soon like a graduation, wedding or dance recital. Crochet is a great way to add an inexpensive unique, elegant touch to any event. Think about what you may have in your own pattern library. It does not have to be fancy, difficult or expensive. I am really fond of the cliche', less is more. This is taking something really simple and turning it in to an elegant piece. Lets look at some basic shapes; circle, rectangle and square. Each of the following pieces can be made with a simple double crochet, chain or a combination of both.

1. The rectangle can be made in to an elegant hair bow or napkin ring.
2. Two squares can be made in to an outer cover for a ring bearer pillow.
3. A small circle motif can be tied with a nice little bow and filled with gift items for wedding party.
4. A crochet square can be made into a handkerchief and embellished with some flowers
5. Store bought napkins and place mats can be decorated with a crochet edging
6. Circle motifs can be shaped in to elegant flowers.

There are a few ideas to turn a simple crochet shape in to something elegant. The ball of thread cost about $3.00 in addition to my time. You can probably get 20 hair bows or 20 napkin rings from each ball of thread.

Custom Crochet Apparel - Crochet Tip 40

When my kids were small, I used to sew a lot of their clothing. With sewing came many patterns so I would make sweaters for my kids shaped to the sewing patterns. You can take a basic sewing pattern, use it as a template and design your own custom crochet apparel by using your fabric pattern as a guide to shaping and size. Keep in mind that fabric patterns allow for 1/4" to 1/2" seam allowance so it will not be necessary to go outside the line. Remember to crochet a 4"x4" or 10cm x 10cm square to gauge your yarn.

FPDC =Front Post Double Crochet:

• Wrap the yarn over your crochet hook.
• From the front of your work, insert your hook to the right side of your next stitch.
• Bring it up on the left side of the stitch.
• Wrap the yarn over your crochet hook.
• Pull your yarn through. You will be pulling it behind the post of the previous double crochet. This will give you 3 loops on your hook.
• Complete your double crochet the same way that a double crochet is created.

BPDC = Back Post Double Crochet:

• Wrap the yarn over your crochet hook.
• From the back of your work, insert your hook to the right side of your next stitch.
• Bring it up and around to the left side of the stitch inserting the hook to the back of your work.

Day of Service

Today is a holiday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. here in America. It is also recognized as a day of service, where people are going out in to the community to provide help for charitable organizations. People who crochet have a very generous spirit, through out the year. That is part of the genetic makeup of a crocheter. Cold Weather Crochet Projects

I hope everyone is staying warm that has been hit by the cold weather. It was 28° when I woke up this morning, which is very cold for this part of the country. The high has been about 45° for the day. Normal temperatures are about 55°-60° this time of the year.

This has been a busy week with 7 new video's uploaded to Youtube. That is why it may seem a little quite here on the crochet blog. I started and ended the week with details on chart crochet for the Barack Obama Tapestry and Blue Star Service Flag Tapestry.

Throughout the week I posted 5 new square tutorials. They are great for making random granny squares for exchanges or a random square afghans. The traditional granny square is sort of an encore, now that I am no longer limited by time. The instructions are all in one video, so no more parts. The Basketweave tutorial will double for a crochet scarf or afghan. I will be posting written instructions for the basketweave tutorial.

Video Tutorial: Crochet Blue Star Service Flag Tapestry

This is the same technique that I used to create the Barack Obama crochet piece. The Blue Star Service Flag was a fun project for me to make. It worked up very quick, with no mistakes. I have made two flags so far. The idea came from my dad as I was talking to him on the phone one Sunday, a few weeks ago. Many of you know that I am a former military spouse. My children are now serving our country with the United States Military. Crochet is something that provided comfort for me, throughout the years of many deployments.

The video tutorial is showing how to create a crochet project from a chart. I am including a smiley face for those of you that would like to practice on a different project than the flag. I included a beige background with the smiley. It will be very easy for you to substitute another color in place of the beige.

Materials
H Crochet Hook
Document Protector
Marking Pencil/Pen
4-ply Worsted Weight Yarn

Gauge 4" x 4" = 16 Rows, 12 Stitches

NOTE: It is not recommended to crochet your piece, without securing your tails with some sort of knot. The stitches will come apart if you just sew them in without knotting in some way.

Sewing in the Tails: The video shows two ways to secure your yarn tails in the form of an individual knot or tying the two strands together. Your work should never come apart. You can cut your yarn tails to a length that is comfortable for you to work with.

Knotting on the Backside: You may choose a backside of your work. If that is the case, you will tie your tails together so they do not come apart.

Puff Stitch Crochet Square - 5 Rounds

Puff Stitch:

1. Wrap the yarn over your hook, insert the hook through the stitch or space. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull through. There will be 3 loops on the hook.
   
2. Wrap the yarn over your hook. Insert the hook through the same stitch or space. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull through. There will be 5 loops on the hook.

How to Crochet from a Chart

Step 1: Create your Chart
Each square on the chart, represents a single crochet stitch. I started with a foundation single crochet of 68 or you can do a chain of 69. What I would do differently is to flip the chart sideways and crochet my rows from the side of the chart, starting with a foundation single crochet of 75 or a chain of 76. There are many different free sources online, where you can create a detailed chart.

Step 2: Purchase Your Yarn Colors and Materials
For this piece, I used 4-ply yarn of different brands and a size G crochet hook. I used 6 colors for the main crochet. A 7th color was introduced for the cross stitch.
I purchased a document protector from my local office supply store and a grease pencil. As I finished each row, I would mark the row with the grease pencil. I can reuse my document protector a few times by removing the the grease pencil markings with baby oil.


I created my yarn chart to eliminate confusion. This was to keep track of yarn strand placement and where I am using them on the color chart. It is going to be difficult to match the yarn exact to what is printed. Fairly close is going to be good enough. You can mix colors when you are finished through cross stitch and embroidery. It really opens the door to some unique and different artwork through crochet.

Step 3: Follow your chart to create your masterpiece

Since it is done with single crochet, it is pretty easy to do. It is just a single crochet piece with color changes. Don't be intimidated by color changes. I changed colors by cutting the yarn at each color change and pulling the new color through the two loops of the last single crochet. I started out sewing in some of my tails as you can see at the bottom of the image. Because I had so many tails in such a small area, it distorted my piece, making it to full. I decided on a front side and back side of my work. From that point on, I cut tails and tied a knot on the back of my piece. If you are changing colors less, you may find that sewing in the tails will work for you, therefore making your piece reversible. It can be done with knots or tails. Both ways will be correct.

Step 4: Color Blend your piece by Cross Stitch and Embroidery

When I purchased the pink, I thought it would be a softer, more subtle pink. It popped to much so I softened it with a cross stitch of light brown from my color chart, over the top of the pink. I separated a 4-ply strand of yarn, in to a 2-ply strand of yarn for the cross stitching. The forehead shows the blending process.

I still had two browns that were to close in color. My solution was to introduce an off-white cross stitch to the external medium brown. That just brought it all together and saved the piece that I came close to throwing away.

Barack Obama Crochet Tapestry - Painting with Yarn

I am very proud of this piece and struggled to get it done. As with any of my projects, I am very critical when I am right in the middle of them. That is because I am seeing things that no one else will ever see. The biggest compliment for me, was when my husband suggested that I get it framed.

The pattern was designed with crochet software for making filet crochet. It was created following the horizontal chart, which made my work to squashed. From now on I will follow the vertical chart. The finished size is 22" long by 20" wide.

I wanted to make it in color, with as few colors as possible but still retain recognition of who is in my piece. 6 colors were the magic number. As I progressed, I realized my light color was to light, bold and popped to much. My medium browns were to close together so they did not have the pop between colors that I was looking for. My solution was to cross stitch over 2 of the parts that needed help, adding some color blending. I took my 4-ply yarn and pulled it apart to get 2-ply yarn for cross stitching. I toned down my light color with some brown and added a 7th color(eggshell) to give my medium brown more definition. It worked!!!! Halfway through the project, I considered throwing it away and starting over. Now I am glad that I did not throw away my first ever, detailed yarn painting.

I do consider my piece a tapestry or any piece crocheted in this way a tapestry. I know there are people who disagree and that is alright. The definition of tapestry is "picture woven by hand." Other than that there is no formal name that I have ever heard for this type of crochet.

Default Crochet Instruction Details - Joining & Turning - Crochet Tip 39

Lack of crochet instruction details and errors will add to confusion for a new crocheter. Having overlooked instruction details myself, I have a great appreciation for everyone who writes and shares a crochet pattern. This is a tip that becomes second nature to seasoned crocheters, which may be why it is not always included in the instructions. If your pattern lacks telling you to join or chain, keep the following in mind.

1. By default, you join at the end of a round. Pictures are a good way to see what is supposed to be done if you think that joining is not correct.
2. By default, you chain ?? amount to get to the next row/round. Traditional crochet instructions tell you to CH 1 for a Single Crochet, CH 2 for a Half Double Crochet and CH 3 for a Double Crochet.

Round 1: CH 2 (does not count as stitch), 12 DC through the chain loop, join.

Round 2: CH 2 (does not count as stitch), 2 DC in ea DC around. (24 Double Crochet Total)

Round 3: Ch 2, 1 DC, CH 2, 2 DC, in the same space. Skip 1 DC, * 2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC, sk the next DC, complete 11 times from*, join.

Round 4: SL ST to CH 2 SP. CH 3, 2 DC, CH 2, 3 DC in CH 2 space. * 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC in the next CH 2 space. Complete 11 times total from *, join.

Round 5: SL ST to CH 2 SP. CH 3, 2 DC, CH 2, 3 DC in CH 2 space CH 1 * 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC in the next CH 2 space, CH 1. Complete 11 times total from *, join.

Sandwich the 3 felt circles together, between each crochet motif. Double check to make sure the right side of each motif is facing outward. When everything is aligned, sew a secure seam across the top of the sandwiched motifs. You can also do this with your sewing machine

Removing Extra Rows on a Finished Piece - Crochet Tip 38

I have found in the past, that after I finished a project, to include sewing in and hiding the tail, I did not like the length of the piece. So I removed rows and stitches. There are two ways it can be done.

1. Carefully cut the strand of yarn, right through the stitches, on the row that you want to take off. I have found that starting in the center of the row works best for this technique. You will want to make sure to leave a length of tail for sewing in your ending stitch,by not starting your cut to close to the edge.
   
2. If you want to save the yarn, you can cut at the ending stitch, ending row and unravel it from there.

Making Sense of Written Instructions - Crochet Tip 37

Have you ever looked at a written pattern that you really liked with intentions of making the project? You read through the pattern or start to read the first few rounds/rows? By the time you were done, you were so overwhelmed by the instructions, you talked yourself out of making the project? I know this from my own experiences reading instructions as a new crocheter.

Crochet instructions are no different that starting a new job. Sure, there may be a lot you need to learn and do, but you are not required to do it all at once.

This is a little secret that has helped me over the years. The whole pattern can be broken down in to segments.

• Segment 1 - Foundation: Work your foundation.
  

• Segment 2 - First round/row: What stitch or stitches are necessary to accomplish the first round/row? If it is a new stitch for you, it may be necessary to practice the stitch prior to starting the project.
  

• Segment 3 - Are there different sets of stitches being done? Each round/row may have sets of stitches and repeats can be worked at as an individual segment.

• Segment 4- Moving on to the consecutive round/row and breaking it down in to segments.
  

There is no need to feel overwhelmed when reading a set of instructions. Since we can only do one stitch at a time, it is not necessary to understand the instructions as a whole at the beginning of the project. Once you complete the project, it will all make sense.

Examples of Ways to Use Fun Fur or Eyelash Yarn

Here are a few examples of how I have used fun fur or eyelash yarn. I have also made scarves out if it. It is a very difficult yarn to use alone so I will use it with another strand of yarn/thread that is similar in color or as an accent to a contrasting color.
