The hat size as I have made it is estimated at 17 inches or 43.2 centimeters. Using a smaller crochet hook is an easy way to modify the hat for a smaller head.

This flower curls right around like a curly cue. You can make it as full/long as you want to while using any combination of petals.

Make a chain of 31.

Row 1: work a single crochet in the second chain from the hook, chain 2, skip 1 chain, work a single crochet in the next chain. Continue across. This is not a project that has to be precise. If you end up with an extra chain at the end, go head and make the last chain 2 and single crochet right next to the last single crochet. With this chain amount you will have about 15 chain 2 loops.

There is a variety of ways to make the petals. You can make your petals all the same or make them all different.

Petal 1: CH 1, 4 HDC, CH 1 SL ST. All in the same chain loop.

Petal 2: CH 1, 6 HDC, CH 1 SL ST. All in the same chain loop.

Petal 3: CH 1, 5 DC, CH 1 SL ST. All in the same chain loop.

Petal 4: CH 2, 5 DC, CH 2 SL ST. All in the same chain loop.

Petal 5: CH 1, 3 DC, SC, 3 DC CH 1 SL ST. All in the same chain loop.

Upon completion, you will cut off a long tail. Wind the flower around and shape it how you want it to look. Unique Ideas for Crochet Projects

When my daughter was born, I remember someone sending a little pink ceramic bootie with a flower. With that memory in mind, I thought it would be fun to stiffen the crochet hightop so it could hold flowers. I used a stiffening product called Smooth On 327. I purchased it after watching it used on a segment of Martha Stewart. The flowers are held in place with some flower foam that can be purchased from your local craft store.

I also stiffened a doily in to a basket shape. I can see many different ways to use the basket. Someone may be doing a wedding with a budget. This would be a great way to add an elegant personal touch. A liner could be added to the basket with some moss and flowers for a unique floral arrangement. You could also do a candy basket or bath accessory basket.

Toe Top
I am providing two was to make the toe top.
Technique 1 - Magic circle, Work 6 HDC in the loop, pull shut, CH 1, turn, Work 2 HDC in EA ST around for a total of 12HDC. Work 2 HDC in each stitch around for a total of 24. Knot to magic circle so it will not com apart.

Technique 2 - CH 3, join. Work 6 HDC in the loop, pull shut, CH 1, turn, Work 2 HDC in EA ST around for a total of 12 HDC. Work 2 HDC in each stitch around for a total of 24.

Cut off a long length of tail for either technique. It will be used to sew the toe top to the sole of the bootie.

Attaching Toe top to Sole
Find the front center of the sole. Mark with a yarn marker. Count back 12 stitches. Whip stitch the each individual stitch of the top, top to the matching stitch of the sole.

Ankle Edging Top
With a contrasting color or color of your choice, work 1 row of single crochet across to top. Cut the yarn and sew in the tail.

Lace
Chain 100, SL ST back across the lace. Cut the yarn and sew in the tail. Weave the lace through the eyelets once all the tails are sewn in and everything is attached.

Circle behind star - Chain 7, join. CH 1, pull up loop. Work 12 HDC in the loop. Join with the beginning HDC

Align the star on top of the circle using the best blending color of yarn, to attach the emblem, sewing all pieces at once. Knot and sew in all the tails.

Yarn Size and Confusion

Out of curiosity, I want to know how many of you feel that yarn sizing is confusing and why? I have included my thoughts.


Yarn companies should come up with system to measure yarn sizes better than what they have now. What is wrong with using millimeters as a measurement for the thickness of a strand of yarn? Similar to what is done with crochet hooks and beads. Even fishing line has had a numerical measurement for as long as I can remember.

At one time I used 4 ply worsted weight acrylic yarn and somewhere along the line it became 4 ply medium. Does this mean there is a 4 ply small, large and extra large? Another company has 4 ply medium 50% cotton and 50% acrylic. This will work up a lot smaller than the acrylic yarn mentioned. You can see the size difference with your eye. There is also the 4 ply cotton yarn. It works up a lot larger than the acrylic medium. I would like an explanation or purpose for using the same sizing language with extreme, obvious, visible different size yarns. At this point it is not surprising that everyone is confused, even myself.

It is easy to tell a person to gauge their work but that is still not going to help if a person does not understand gauge. First of all, gauge is very confusing to a new crocheter. Confused crocheters tend to get turned off and frustrated. More times than not I have gauged a piece and ended up with 1/2 or 2/3 of a stitch left over in my measurement even with changing hooks sizes. The other problem with gauge is the unique crochet style that each person will have. People tend to see a pretty yarn(I have done this myself) and have a pattern in mind not even thinking about the size of the yarn used with the pattern vs. the size they are picking up. At this point you run in to a gauge issue with a possible pattern modification. Now what you have is a beginner crocheter who is supposed to gauge a patten and modify it? More Confusion added to the mix. Gauge is something that makes sense over time. It is a Crochet AH-HA moment. To much is put on gauge.

Yarn should have a numerical millimeter sizing of the strand thickness. The yarn companies do a great job with the variety of yarn available is very nice. The measurement system needs a lot of help.

I am off my soapbox and look forward to how each of you feel about this.

Yarn/Cotton of your choice
Yarn Marker - A scrap tail will work great as a yarn marker

I will not be using a chain 1 at the beginning of each round. This is to reduce the visibility of the seam. The top can be worked in a continual round if you choose to do so.

CH 3 Join.

Round 1: Work 9 SC through the chain.

Round 2: Work 1 SC in same ST, *3 SC in next ST. 1 SC in ea of next 2 ST's. Repeat from * 2 times total. 3 SC in next ST. 1 SC in next ST.

Round 3: Work 1 SC in EA of the next 2 St's, *3 SC in next ST. 1 SC in ea of next 4 ST's. Repeat from * 2 times total. 3 SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in EA of the next 2 St's.

Round 4: Work 1 SC in EA of the next 3 St's, *3 SC in next ST. 1 SC in ea of next 6 ST's. Repeat from * 2 times total. 3 SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in EA of the next 3 St's.

Round 5: Work 1 SC in EA of the next 4 St's, *3 SC in next ST. 1 SC in ea of next 8 ST's. Repeat from * 2 times total. 3 SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in EA of the next 4 St's.

Round 6: Work 1 SC in EA of the next 5 St's, *3 SC in next ST. 1 SC in ea of next 10 ST's. Repeat from * 2 times total. 3 SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in EA of the next 5 St's.

Round 7: Work 1 SC in EA of the next 6 St's, *3 SC in next ST. 1 SC in ea of next 12 ST's. Repeat from * 2 times total. 3 SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in EA of the next 6 St's.

Round 8: Work 1 SC in EA of the next 7 St's, *3 SC in next ST. 1 SC in ea of next 14 ST's. Repeat from * 2 times total. 3 SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in EA of the next 7 St's.

Round 9: Work 1 SC in EA of the next 8 St's, *3 SC in next ST. 1 SC in ea of next 16 ST's. Repeat from * 2 times total. 3 SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in EA of the next 8 St's.

Round 10: Work 1 SC in EA of the next 9 St's, *3 SC in next ST. 1 SC in ea of next 18 ST's. Repeat from * 2 times total. 3 SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in EA of the next 9 St's.

Round 11: Work 1 SC in EA of the next 10 St's, *3 SC in next ST. 1 SC in ea of next 20 ST's. Repeat from * 2 times total. 3 SC in next ST. Work 1 SC in EA of the next 10 St's.

Crochet Abbreviations - Skip or Miss

Over the years I have come across patterns that will tell you to MISS a stitch. It does sound confusing. This is the same as SKIP a stitch. Maybe there is someone who knows more about where the term MISS came from. I suspect it is a European term from Great Britain.

Abbreviations
CL - Cluster
DC - Double Crochet
CH - Chain

Cluster - Wrap the yarn over the hook, insert the hook through the stitch/chain. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull it through. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull through two loops. Leave the two loops on the hook. Wrap the yarn over the hook and insert it through the same stitch/chain. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull it through the loop. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull through 2 loops. There will be 3 remaining loops on the hook. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull through all three loops.

Cluster V Stitch - Cluster, CH 2, Cluster in the same space/stitch/chain.

Multiple 3

Make a loose chain. Your work will be tight at the bottom and expand as you progress towards the top if your chain is to tight. You can also use a larger crochet hook to make your chain and a smaller hook for the main portion of your project.

Row 1: Work the first cluster in the 5th Chain from the hook. The first 3 chains will count as the first double crochet. Work the first cluster, CH 2, work next cluster in the same chain. Skip 2 chains and works a V Stitch Cluster in the next chain. See abbreviations for details. Continue across for each V Stitch Cluster. Double Crochet in the last double crochet.

Row 2: CH 3 turn, work a V Stitch Cluster in each Chain 2 space(center of previous cluster) across. Finish with a double crochet in the last stitch which is the chain 3 on the previous row.

Repeat row 2 for the length of the project.

Crochet Hooks - Aluminum vs Plastic, Bamboo, Wood

What I like about the aluminum and steel hooks is that they do not bend. My thoughts are if the plastic hooks have any flexibility, it may make a difference in how I crochet. Flexible plastic will slow me down and affect the consistency of my stitches. If the plastic hook is solid, then it should not make much of a difference. I will use non-flexible hard plastic hooks from time to time.

I have never used a bamboo or wooden hooks to complete a full project. The video tutorial with novelty yarn is the only experience I have had with a wooden hook. It is not enough for me to form an opinion one way or the other.
