Thanks so much for all of your crochet info and videos, they are awesome!! I have a question about hat sizes. I have been making hats for a little while now, but have been guessing on what sizes to make them. So with your hat chart, how do you know when the hat is the right size, what part to you measure. AND if the person measures their head, I'm a little unsure what to do with those measurements, and which hook size to use. Can you help me??? I would greatly appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteThere are a few ways to adjust the size of a hat.
ReplyDelete1. A larger or smaller hook
2. Adding more stitches to the increase rounds.
3. Larger Yarn.
You will gauge your individual crochet style by crocheting a swatch of yarn approximately 4x4 inches. You measure how many rows and how many stitches are in the 4 inches. If you are getting more rows and more stitches in the 4 inch swatch than what the pattern gauge is, then that means your hat is going to be to small or tight. If you follow the pattern materials closely (Hook size, yarn size), your cap should come close to the measurements. Hat sizes are so you have an idea how large to make them. I still find that they are hit and miss when it comes to some sizes.
Teresa! I need to make a toddler size beanie and i can only understand your instructions!! can you give me directions? i can make the newborn beanie easily but i cant seem to get his size right. you told tracey to add more stitches. which stitches??? do i add 1 HDC in each stitch or 2.. im not sure. i just need a video or written directions if you have them. thank you!
ReplyDeleteKatie J,
ReplyDeleteWhat you are doing is modifying the pattern to make it larger. You will need to add more stitches in each round. For instance, if you start off with 6 stitches in the first round and you want to make a larger hat, then you will start off with 8 stitches instead. What size around is your toddler's head?
his head is about 19 inches around. i really appriciate you getting back so soon!! if it is easier you can email me at katiejoseph@live.com
ReplyDeleteHi, Thks so much for the wonderful advice that you leave for all to see!!! :-) I love the videos and I am just in awe of how you find the hours upon hours it must take to do all this work?? Theresa you are a God send to many people online as well as to me! I am trying to get an online business going selling my crocheted items because I am disabled and that is the way I help support myself! Even though I have been crocheting for over 30 years there is always something to learn and that is what I love about crocheting and knitting!! I am not too crazy about all the computer skills needed to be successful online? I trust God to help me with my little crochet business and try to keep my pricing reasonable! I just wanted to thank you for all this advice and the patterns too!

Joni B,
ReplyDeleteThank you. Good luck with your business.
I have the same problem as Katie J. But you replied the answer via email to her, so I am making a beanie that is Single Crochet and I have 60 stitches but it still looks small. Do I have to do the 4X4 square? Or you can tell me off hand what I might be doing wrong. I love all your videos!! I have all your podcast, keep them coming please!! I crochet when I was little and your videos, where so clear and easy to understand, that I remembered everything right away.
ReplyDeleteThank you, this is very helpful as I am making baby things for my best friends twins who are arriving soon! I always find your instructions and videos very helpful.
ReplyDeleteBionerd,
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the comment, thank you. :)
Hi i'm learning to crochet and hav started doing a beanie cap from your instructions.i started off with single stitches and now would like to add double stitches.i would lik to know how to increase each row accordigly.i have reached 12 rows using single stitches alone.i'm making a cap for my 2 year old.
ReplyDeleteTeresa,
ReplyDeleteHello! I am wondering about your measurements for head sizes. As far as the hat height is concerned, are all of these measurements based on the hat having a roll?
Thanks!
anewtkay,
ReplyDeleteThis chart is standard measurement to cover the ears with the hat height.
Hi! I stumbled across your wonderful site and found it extremely helpful especially to a newbie like myself... I was wondering how i can make loose and oversized hats like this http://www.cutiecode.com/images/clothing/tokyo/new/tokyo18319/4.jpg
ReplyDeleteor this

If you can give me some tips I would really appreciate it!
I free-form kiddie hats all the time. Using the measurements provided in the post... you can easily figure out how to make any size hat with any yarn or hook.
ReplyDeleteYou need to know what diameter will create the circumference you desire. For example: Newborn hat = 13-14" circumference... just take 14/3.14 (pi)= approx 4".
Using the yarn and hook of your choosing... make a 4" diameter circle by increasing in the round.
Then simply stop increasing and crochet until the folded hat matches the head length that you need.
Voila! You can make anyone you know a hat now!
Thank you! I have been combing the Internet for this specific answer. You are a Godsend!
DeleteTheresa, I have you favored on YouTube and have for a long time. It is such a small world that the end of my search brought me back to you!
Oh my gosh!! THANK YOU!! I've been trying to figure out how large I need to make my circle for a hat and you have just saved my night!! :)
DeleteCan you please help me? The crochet Kingston hat became to big around. do you have to take rows out because it became to big around?
DeleteMy hat became to big around can you please tell if you have to take rows out for it to fit a small head? I used A I crochet hook. It was huge.
DeleteThank you so much Amber! I have looked high and low to find your response.
DeleteI have been looking for the formula with the diameter and circumference forever. I will have to give this a try. Wish me luck.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the great advice!!
Thank you for all of this wonderful info! I have looked everywhere for a hat size guide with length and width! This is the first one I have found with both. Anyway, here is my question. Everything I make especially hats come out too long. Width gauge is usually close or perfect. Seems like all of my stitches are long. What do you do to correct this? If I go to a smaller hook it makes the hat smaller and the stitiches are still too long! Do I just keave out rows? Thank you so much!!! Jennifer Martin
ReplyDeleteim no expert, but i would say if its the length thats wrong, leave out rows
DeleteThanks! for advice, I am very useful, I wish you all the best for what you are and what you do with drag-Romania Suky
ReplyDeleteHello Teresa,
ReplyDeleteI love you videos they are so easy to understand,Thank you so much for all your hard work!! I was just wondering if you could help me, I have been making your baby Bennie cap in Single crochet, and was wondering how I could make this cap bigger to fit, a toddler, or even my husband? Would I chain more in the beginning or put more then 10 stitches in the center? or would i just keep on increasing every other row? on the baby hat you increased up to every 5 stitches, would I just keep on going to make it bigger? hope you can help, and hope you understand what I'm trying to say lol. thanks so much!
sirena-dawson@hotmail.com
I need some help!im teaching myself to crochet and your vidoes have been very helpful! Its taking me a long time to get the hang of it tho....I made a very cute baby hat from your single crochet baby hat video, and I have been trying to make the same hat but larger for my 5 year old and am having no luck! I thought I could just add rows of the increases and it would be larger but I keep ending up with a large circle, more like a big doyle than a hat:( i dont know if i should keep going with the single crochet and it will turn into a hat or if my circle will just keep getting bigger??
ReplyDeleteYou used to have a pattern for a baby beanie. Is it gone? I am trying to make a beanie for my one year old but I don't know when to stop making it bigger??
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your tips, although I am having the same issue. I keep ending up with a big flat circle. HELP?!!?
ReplyDeleteHeather,
ReplyDeleteIf you are getting circle that is flat and keeps getting larger, this means that to many increase stitches are being worked. By increase, I mean working more than one stitch in the same stitch. When you stop working the increase stitches, the sides of the hat will start to form, creating your hat.
I am making a hat for 2 of my cousins whom are 8 and 10 they do not live close to me so i'm not positive on the circumference of their head. what sizes do you suggest and how do i know where to measure the hat at to know i'm at the right size before continuing with crocheting and not increasing anymore. You can e-mail me @ fmxchic23@hotmail.com Thanks so much, was going to visit them this weekend and hope to have them done for them....
ReplyDeleteThank you Teresa for all your great videos and instructions, you have taken my crocheting to new levels. I would like to add a comment to the person who asked about hat height. I find that the height listed in your charts is perfect for covering the ears but if you want a shorter flapper girl look or cloche just make the hat about 1 inch shorter. The hat will then come to the mid ear. I also use the PI (3.14) method to determine hat size. It makes for the perfect fitting hat no matter what size hook or yarn. I also subtract about 1 inch for the head measurement to make a snugger hat. So if the head measures 18" just figure your hat size based on 17".
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful site! I always come back to it when I lose my measurements card for making hats. I don't use patterns (mainly because it takes me too long to follow one). But I have noticed people having trouble with getting their hats to fit. Because I am self taught, I make my hats from the bottom up. That way it doesn't matter what yarn or hook you want to use. I start with a chain the lenght of the head circumference measurement. Then I just connect the ends and crochet in the round until I get the depth I need for the hat. Once deep enough I decrease my stitches in the following manner (first 2 rounds skip a stitch every 6 stitches, next 2 - 3 rounds depending on the hat size skip every 4 stitches. You then skip every 2, then 1 until the hold is closed. This can be adjusted for every hat once you get the hang of it). I found this so much easier and faster to make hats. Hope this helps some of your followers!
ReplyDeleteHi, thanks for posting this hat sizing chart, it's so helpful! I have a question though, on the newborn size, there is both a head circumference and a hat circumference, and they are different. On all the other sizes, no hat circumferences is listed. Does that mean for a newborn hat, I would make the hat 11.5-13", but a 3-6 month hat should be 14-17"? Or should the 3-6 month hat circumferences be smaller then the head circumference as well?
ReplyDeleteThank you!
I am wanting to make my own crochet pattern. The circumference is 21". I want to start with a sc and then move to a hdc. I am having a hard time knowing when to stop increasing and just crochet. Is there a "magic" formula for how to know when to stop increases on all different size heads? Thanks!
ReplyDelete-Alison
Thank you so much for this page! It is very informative. However, I have a question. I am trying to create a hat pattern for a 21" circumference. I want to start with sc and move to hdc for a different look. How do you know when to stop with the increasing (for any size hat for that matter)? I did the PI method someone mentioned but it seems SO big! Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
ReplyDelete-Alison
Thank you Teresa. I really just found you tonight as I was searching out ideas to make some fun and happy chemo caps.
ReplyDeleteI have just started a charity project for a local Children's hospital making caps for kids. I call them "Kimmie's Happy Caps" I found this guide and will totally be able to use it for these caps.
This is one of my ways to give back with the talent God has given me. Also I want to see the kids smile.
Thank you so much Teresa! I made my first beanie for my son - he wanted a red beanie and i made it in bulky yarn. I was able to finish it super quick due to your tutorials and very clear instructions.

Thank you so much! I am a beginner crocheter in sixth grade, (our teacher is making us crochet a hat/scarf/blanket for extra credit). And your website is amazing! Your videos on how to make a beanie were EXTREMELY helpful.

Camille,
ReplyDeleteThat is great that you are earning extra credit with crochet!
Kimberly,
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you are making hats to put a smile on the face of sick children!
Hi Teresa, I see that you have the Head and Hat Circumference for each size hat. What I'm mostly confused with is, how will I know that my round has reached the proper Circumference for the size that I am making. For example, if I am making a toddler hat, is there a way that I can measure with a measuring tape, what I have crocheted already to let me know that I have reached the correct Circumference before the hat starts to form it's downward hat shape? I'm sure you've answered this question many times but I hope my question makes sense because I got the crochet part down and I make really nice hats, but when people ask for custom sizes, I really what to be confident in knowing exactly what I'm doing. Thank you so much for all your wonderful information and youtube tutorials, you've helped me out A LOT!!
ReplyDeleteHello Teresa, I see that you have the hat and head circumference measurements for the different hat sizes, But what I'm most confused with is how to know that I am in fact making the correct size that is requested of me to make. Is there a way I can use my measuring tape to make sure that I am making the Newborn, Toddler, Adult etc. sizes? I know you've answered this many times but I still only end up with a small/medium hat. I want to be able to, when someone asks for a certain size/inches of the person, know exactly what I'm doing. I really hope my question made sense. Thank you for all of your wonderful tutorials and how you have such time and patience when doing so! You're awesome!
ReplyDeleteYou have taught me to crochet!!! I sooooo appreciate it! I have a question re: headbands for babies. Should they be the same size as hats? I watched your tutorial on the wheel hair band but I want to make some plain ones and add flowers. Your input would be GREATLY appreciated! Keep up the AWESOME Videos! Thanks again! Dani
ReplyDeleteI just came across your site, and love it. I saw your video for the puff baby hat and want to make one for my one year old great-granddaughter. how do I adjust the size for her. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteHi Teresa, Just found your site today while looking for a crochet hat with ear flaps. I'm looking for a pattern for an adult. Do you have a pattern I could use? Thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteHi Teresa, My name is Cristina Solon from Philippines. I started watching your video tutorial last September 2010 and from time to time I watch your other videos. I've been learning a lot as in super a lot of learnings from your easy-to-follow videos. You inspired me and happy to say that I already selling my crochet pouch bags and beanies. Also, I put up an online store PickMyCrochet.multiply.com Thank you so much for your generosity.
ReplyDeleteI was struggling with design of a new hat... and you saved me once again!!!! YEAH!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this with me. It has really helped me out.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this info! but I am new to this, and wanted to know if anyone knew how many rows are on the top circle part - before it starts going down the sides of the hat.
ReplyDeleteHi there!
ReplyDeleteI have a 5 year old and I have followed one of your videos for a beanie cap, the cap turned out to be slightly big for her. I'm still new at this. How do I make the beanie smaller to fit her head? Thanks!
Teresa, I got into crocheting because of you all you video look so cool and you give step to. Step instruction. You also post written instruction that I find very useful. Thank you I wud like to ask yu a. Question I made a Kingston hat for my bf. cousin. And his lil sister saw and she want one. I don't know how to make it for her. Her head is 17.5 in how would I do that in Kingston pattern do I make less than 18 stitches in the beginning or somethin else please help I'm tryin to finish this over the weekend
ReplyDeleteYOU ARE A LIFE SAVER! AHH THANKS SO MUCH!
ReplyDeleteI had the same question as Danielle but I don't see a response to her question.

Hi, thanks for posting this hat sizing chart, it's so helpful! I have a question though, on the newborn size, there is both a head circumference and a hat circumference, and they are different. Thank you!
These are nothing more than estimates.
DeleteThank you thank you thank you!!!! I could NOT find a way to size my hats for a while. I only started about a month ago and that was one of the biggest challenges for me. Now that I have a general idea for sizing, I was wondering how I'd adjust the height on the hats to accommodate ear flaps.
ReplyDeleteTIA,
Brandi
I have this bookmarked. It helps me make beanies when I don't have a chance to measure the head the beanie is going to. Also helped me with head bands!
ReplyDeletei would love to be able to find a guide like this for baby boots....even for toddlers too.... i make them too big because im afraid they will be too small
ReplyDeletewhat a life saver! thanks for posting this!
ReplyDeleteIf the circumference is 20 inches, shouldn't it measure 10 inches across when laid flat? This is what is confusing me. I won a pattern from someone and they said the diameter for a newborn's hat would be 4.5 inches. Doesn't that mean his head would only be nine inches around? That seems way too small to me. And the hat height...is that measured from the crown to the brim?
ReplyDeleteCircumference is the length around and is the measurement that is most important. I would ask what the circumference is. The diameter can be the same for two caps that end up different sizes if you use different stitch amounts. I don't know why some use diameter since it is confusing. Either the hat fits around a specific size or not.
DeleteWith diameter, that is going to be the crown.
DeleteThank you for the measurements, I use roind looms for my creations and the sizes are perfect :-)
ReplyDeleteOn this post, could you add one picture so I can pin this portion? I want to be able to refer to it over and over again. But without a picture to grab it will only let me pin other posts not this one.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
Thank you!!!
