Video Tutorial: Toddler - Child - StarStitch Cap
If some of the toddler cap video looks familiar, that is because it is.
The first 6 rounds are created the same as the adult version of the cap. I did a little recycling and restructuring to create the toddler cap. After round 6, there are no more increase rounds, so the cap will fit a small child's head.

Size: 18"-20", toddler size

Size "G" Crochet Hook
You can use an "H" hook to make the cap larger.

4-Ply Worsted Weight Yarn - I used Red Heart for this tutorial. There are many types of yarn brands that will work with this pattern.

Cap can be created in stripes or a solid color.

NOTE*: All half double crochet stitches will be done in the center joining loop of the stitch in the previous row.

Chain 5, join.

Round 1: Ch 1, 20 HDC in LP, join.

Round 2: CH 3, 10 Star Stitches, join in beg ch 3. (10 StarStitches total)

Round 3:SL ST to the center joining loop of the first stitch in the previous row ,CH 1, 4 HDC in same joining space, 4 HDC in each joining space around. 10 increases (40 Half Double Crochet total)

Round 4: Attach new color. CH 3, 20 StarStitches around, join in beg ch 3. SL ST over to the joining loop of the first starstitch. (20 Starstitches total)

Round 5:SL ST to the center joining loop of the first stitch in the previous row, CH 1, 2 HDC, *4 HDC, 2 HDC, Repeat around from *. (60 Half Double
Crochet total )

Round 6: Attach new color. CH 3, 30 StarStitches around, join in beg CH 3. (30 StarStitches total)

Round 7: SL ST to the center joining loop of the first stitch in the previous row. CH 1, HDC, * 2 HDC in ea joining loop around. Repeat around from *. Join in beg st. (60 Half Double Crochet total)

Round 8-13: Repeat rounds 6 and 7.

  1. Hello! I've been watching your tutorials and they have been a huge help!!! I'm making a dress from your baby dress pattern at the moment. I'm wanting to make a sweater for my husband (I know, cliche), but I'm having a little trouble finding an up-to-date pattern. Do you have any or have any suggestions where to go for a pattern? Thanks a ton! You have no idea how much you've helped me!!

  2. Gypsy Mama, Thank you. There are a lot of resources for free crochet patterns but I am not sure about the sweater patterns for men. One thought that comes to mind is if it is just the stitch that you are not liking in the patterns you are finding, then you can change the stitch to something more appealing. For instance, if the pattern is done with the shell stitch, then you can replace it with the single crochet. You will want to measure and make sure that you are within the recommended sizes. Don't be afraid to use different stitches.

The other thing you might try is a crochet group. I belong to one called CrochetPartners with yahoogroups. All you need is a yahoo account to join. You can send out a message with what you are looking for and if anyone knows of links and books, they will respond to you. It is a very high traffic group so you will get a lot of messages not related to your request. Maybe you are already familiar with it. I hope that helps.

  3. Gypsy Mama, One more thought that I forgot to mention. The yarn companies, Lion Brand, Coats & Clark, Caron, annie's attic, all have websites where they offer free patterns. You could go to their website and do a search to see if they offer it for free.

  4. Teresa,
I wanted to take time to thank you for this crochet blog. My mother used to crochet a lot when I was younger and now I've started learning and making things. It brings me so much joy! Your tutorial are very helpful. Doing flowers are my favorite! I look forward to making the fun hat! Have a wonderful Day

  5. Thank you so much Teresa! I'll try out the yahoo group and also changing the stitch style. You really have been a blessing! This year for Christmas....everyone's getting crocheted!!!

  6. Hi guys,

I agree that sweater/jacket crochet patterns for men are hard to find online. Whatever there is available are ok but not the patterns I'd like to wear:(

  7. Teresa, I made my very first beanie watching your vid for a HDC baby beanie. It is so cute. I then made the white single crochet beanie for an adult. Came out perfect:)

Now I want to make the HDC baby beanie for a four year old. How do I do that? I'm sure I increase but I don't know what the measurement should be.

Thank you for your vids. I am a visual person so your vids are perfect for me.

  8. csriz,
The sizing I have is 19-20" for a child size head. If you can, take a measurement of the child head so you can make a custom fit. Recently I posted instructions for an adult stripe beanie cap and spiral cap. It has the flatter top like the baby beanie you are talking about. I used a size "I" crochet hook. The cap is a snug fit already so you can reduce the size without altering the pattern by using a smaller crochet hook. The size hooks I have in mind are an F or G. That should take the size down for a 4 year old without altering to much. If you want to use a size "I" hook, you can just stop increasing after round 7 with 48 single crochet. I am including the 2 patterns that I have been writing to you about. They are both written with the same amount of stitched only one is with stripes and the other is a spiral. Let me know how it works.
