Solid Crochet Square Baby Afghan

This afghan is approximately 24" across. You can continue with the basic pattern to make it larger. I found that it was necessary to switch to a smaller crochet hook on round 14, otherwise it was getting to full on the edges. The video will get you started for the first 5 rounds. I would recommend a simple reverse or backward single crochet edging.

4-Ply Yarn

Abbreviations
CH - Chain
SL ST - Slip Stitch
DC - Double Crochet
EA - Each
LP - Loop
SC - Single Crochet

Chain 4, join.

Round 1: CH 3, 2 DC through CH loop. *Chain 2, 3 DC, complete 3 times total from *, CH 1, SC in beginning chain to join.

Round 2: CH 3, 1 DC in same CH space. 1 DC in ea of the next 3 DC, *2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC in the next CH 2 SP. 1 DC in ea of the next 3 DC, Complete 3 times total from *, 2 DC in beginning CH, CH 1, SC in beginning chain to join. (7 double crochet total on each side)

Round 3: CH 3, 1 DC in same CH space. 1 DC in ea of the next 7 DC, *2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC in the next CH 2 SP. 1 DC in ea of the next 7 DC, Complete 3 times total from *, 2 DC in beginning CH, CH 1, SC in beginning chain to join. (11 double crochet total on each side)

Round 4: CH 3, 1 DC in same CH space. 1 DC in ea of the next 11 DC, *2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC in the next CH 2 SP. 1 DC in ea of the next 11 DC, Complete 3 times total from *,2 DC in beginning CH, CH 1, SC in beginning chain to join. (15 double crochet total on each side)

Round 5: CH 3, 1 DC in same CH space. 1 DC in ea of the next 15 DC, *2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC in the next CH 2 SP. 1 DC in ea of the next 15 DC, Complete 3 times total from *, 2 DC in beginning CH, CH 1, SC in beginning chain to join. (19 double crochet total on each side)

 Round 6: CH 3, 1 DC in same CH space. 1 DC in ea of the next 19 DC, *2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC in the next CH 2 SP. 1 DC in ea of the next 19 DC, Complete 3 times total from *, 2 DC in beginning CH, CH 1, SC in beginning chain to join. (23 double crochet total on each side)

    Is it possible to do this with a half double crochet or single crochet? If so, how would that change up the pattern? I have a great chenille yarn that is rather thick (Bulky 5), recommended hook 7mm. Any tips to reduce the bulk, but still keep the weave tight and warm? I like the simplicty of this pattern and I have a Boye book pattern that is similar, but I want to use this yarn. Any tips, patterns, suggestions at all? I love your site, patterns, and videos. You have renewed my love of crochet since I am self taught and often get 'stuck' :) ~andrea

    Andrea,
    You could use the smaller stitches. A smaller crochet hook will keep the stitches tighter. If you were using single crochet, you may want to do only 2 or 3 in the corners or it may become to full.

Baby Afghan - I chained 100 for the baby afghan and used a size K hook and 4 ply yarn.

Multiple: 5

Materials
4 ply yarn
Size K crochet hook - You can use other size hooks for this project

Abbreviations
SK - Skip
Ch - Chain
DC - Double Crochet
EA - Each
SP - Space

Extended or Long Double Crochet - This is where you will work a double crochet several stitches below the row you are on. You will need to pull up on the stitch and allow for some additional yarn, so the stitch does not sag.
