Skill Level - Easy

HDC - Half Double Crochet
CH - Chain
SL ST - Slip Stitch
MC - Magic Circle
SH - Shell

( total stitches ) - This is the amount of stitches you will have on each round.
Shell for this pattern will be: 2 HDC, CH 1, 2 HDC

Size G/4.25 mm crochet hook
4 ply yarn
Tapestry Needle
Caron 4-ply yarn

This cap will fit an approximate 18 inch head. Since it is made with a G hook, you can make the cap larger with a size H, I/5.5mm or J hook.

Work a magic circle MC. Chain 3 and join as an alternative to the magic circle.

Round 1: Chain 1, Work 12 HDC through the magic loop or chain. Do not join and work in a continual round. (12 HDC total) You may want to get a yarn marker to mark the first stitch of each round.

Round 2: Work 2 HDC in the top of the first stitch. Work 2 HDC in each stitch around.
(24 HDC total)

Round 3:
Work 1 HDC in each stitch around. (24 HDC total)

Round 4: *Work 1 HDC in the next stitch, work 2 HDC in the next stitch. Continue around from * for a total of 36 HDC.
(36 HDC total)

Round 5:
*Work 1 HDC in each of the next 2 stitches, work 2 HDC in the next stitch. Continue around from * for a total of 48HDC. (48 HDC total)
Round 6: Work 1 HDC in each stitch around.
(48 HDC total) Skip 1 stitch and slip stitch in the next to even off the round.

Round 7: Chain 1, pull up, Work 2 HDC, Ch 1, 2 HDC in the same stitch. *Skip 2 stitches. Work a shell in the next stitch. Continue around from *, join with the beginning shell.

Round 8-15: Slip stitch over to the chain 1 of the next shell. Chain 1, pull up, Work 2 HDC, Ch 1, 2 HDC in the chain 1 space of the previous shell. * Work a shell in the center chain of of the next shell. Continue around from *, join with the beginning shell. (16 Shells total)

    When doing a custom hat for a child, you will need the size of the head. There is always a smaller cap in the larger caps.
